Many Christians react with anger, disgust or vehemence at the mere use of the term 'under the spirit of mammon'. They treat it like a dirty word, and it is so. Rightly so. Many true Christians today can be described as 'under the spirit of mammon'. To be under the spirit of mammon does not mean that one is seeking to serve mammon. No! A person can be seeking to serve God, but hindered from fully do so, and fully trusting and submitting to God because of all the seductions, distractions and enticement mammon places in our way. A true Christian can be under the spirit of mammon. Do not think that a true Christian can never be under the spirit of mammon. Such is the height of arrogance: to think that because one is a true Christian, one can never be under the spirit of mammon.
Many modern evangelicals think they could never be under the spirit of mammon because they are not careerists. A person can be very very content, and not greedy and yet be under the spirit of mammon. A person is under the spirit of mammon as long as one is fully content in Christ.
I've been mocked by a modern evangelical who alleges I claim that if one does not warn about mammon, one is automatically under it. It is modern evangelicals like this who hinder efforts of the church is exposing dark works, a mandate of the Church (Ephesians 5:11), and in doing so, undermine the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) which involved teaching people to obey Jesus's commands.
One may say, "that will make the unsaved think we are legalistic". If they think that, rebuke them and tell them that Jesus does require righteousness and holiness. Christianity does have a set of principles to live by - the principles of God to live to life pleasing to Him. The "rules" of the Bible, properly called the Law of God, are to show that no one is good, no not one (Galatians 3:19; Romans 3:10-12). Many of the these people make this accusation themselves are legalistic themselves - legalistic in the liberal sense, thinking that if one breaks a rule of political correctness, such as speaking out against feminism or homosexuality, one is evil. Is that not legalism?
The unsaved who raise the objection that "Christianity is about rules" do so out of their hatred of God and their rebellion. Is is not foolish to accommodate for such fools? The only thing more foolish and abominable than he who has no fear of God is he who accommodates for those who have no fear of God.
Why do Christians accommodate for the unsaved lack of fear of God, or defiance of God? Why? Because they seek the approval of the world. They are caught up and seduced by the things of the world - lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and pride of life (1 John 2:16). If one is caught up by these things, one will have a fear of the world because one seeks it approval. Such is the spiritual adultery of the modern church. James 4;4 says: Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved (Psalm 119:47).
