Mammon manifests himself most in the typical western Christian of the modern church. The west has experienced much material prosperity, and the church in the west has not been immune from mammon's power and influence over the whole world. Mammon targets the west because it it proud of its prosperity, thinks it is entitled to anything it desires and promotes its liberalistic, hedonistic, materialistic and sexualised ways to the nations it considers to be "backwards", "unenlightened" or "oppressive", merely because they do not support the liberalism or materialism of the west.
How has the church in the west fallen under his power? It has done so by allowing him to seduce it. This is manifested through its embrace of the doctrine of rights. You may ask, what is wrong with the doctrine of rights and argue that it is a doctrine that elevates the marginalised and downtrodden which is what many western Christians argue: the evidence of the mammonisation of the western modern church. Even the very idea of elevating the marginalised and downtrodden is a mammonised idea. It is a one that feeds on the desire for earthly security in this world which is all passing away (1 John 2:17).
There is so such thing as a "right" given by God to anyone whatsoever. A right is an entitlement, which confers on obligation on one to the person with the right. God owes none of us anything! None! God is perfectly entitled and perfectly just, right and holy to burn us all in Hellfire for an Eternity. Since this is the case, none of us have even the "right" to a single breath. Many in the modern church openly criticise people for asking for so-called the right to homosexual "marriage". However, what most in the modern western church do not ever even acknowledge is that the very concept of "rights" itself is a false one - it is doctrine of demons,
Jesus did not demand to be treated according to His equality with God, who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God (Philippians 2:6). You may argue that that is Jesus, that is what He had to do to die for the sins of the world, and that it does not apply to ordinary humans. This is a great misunderstanding. The spirit of the verse is that Jesus did not demand to be treated equally with God, so if we humans who are absolutely undeserving of everything including a single small breath, we should all the more not seek after any "rights" whatsoever. You may still argue that we have "rights" given by God to us because He does give us all the gift of life.
A right is something deserved. We humans deserve nothing, and God owes us absolutely nothing. So therefore, there is no such thing as a human "right" at all. You may argue that still, many people are treated unjustly, and so they deserve justice against another, that is, they deserve to have the other person punished, thinking you are so righteous in acknowledging that. Good, even the vile unsaved sexually immoral people think justice is right! They campaign for justice to see that the evils others have perpetrated against them is served justice.
To think that one deserves to see that those who have perpetrated evil against oneself or those who one cares for deserve justice is itself a self-seeking thing. The reason and the only reason why someone should feel anger against evil is solely because it offends God. That is the only reason for which one should feel anger against evil or sin. Anger against sin or evil for any other reason is selfish, self-righteous, proud and arrogant. God hates selfishness, pride and arrogance for they are the fruits of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21).
Rather, it is that if you feel no anger and indifferent towards evil, you are worse than an unbeliever, the same way you are worse than an unbeliever if you care not for your family (1 Timothy 5:8). It is not that you are righteous and holy by caring for your family's earthly needs, for even the vile fornicators do that. It it that you deny the faith (1 Timothy 5:8), and therefore blaspheme God by professing Christ and despising what He commands. The only reason why it is worse that an unbeliever is because at least he does not claim the faith in Christ. Hence, why even the vile unsaved people can be devoted and caring towards their families - because they are loved ones. It is all too easy to love those who love us. Even the vile, abominable sinners do that. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same (Matthew 5:46)?
The spirit of mammon may not manifest himself in the modern church in all cases through anxiety for earthly needs. However, he does manifest himself in more deceptive ways, such as through the belief that each human has rights, one held by many western true Christians. He deceives them by blinding them into thinking that one deserves to see justice served by evil perpetrators against oneself or those who one loves or cares for. It is not even that one "deserves" to see one's perpetrators serve justice. Rather, it is that the perpetrator of evil or sin has sinned and offended God who is Holy, Holy, Holy (Isaiah 6:3, Revelation 4:8). It is solely because God hates sin that perpetrators of evil deserve to be punished according to the demands justice, not because unholy, despicable humans have been harmed or offended.
Thus, to think that one "deserves" to see one's perpetrators of evil serve justice is a selfish one, and in the spirit of claiming one's so-called "rights". That is precisely what is means to be under the spirit of mammon - to desire one's fleshly desires, even those that are based on truth, to be satisfied. You may argue that one does deserve to see one's perpetrators serve justice in one's eyes because one has been truly wronged. That is what is exactly what means to be mammonised, to desire your self-centred desires of the flesh to be satisfied. That is the problem with many western Christians. This is clearly manifested in the so-called Christian 'social justice' movements. It seeks (earthly) justice first, rather than care to spread the Gospel of the evil, abominable, vile sinners by using the Law of God to convict them of their sins and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to tell them how they can be redeemed from sin and the power of sin over them. It thrives on anxiety for justice.
Mammon manifests himself in all kinds of ways, not just through accumulation of money or possessions. As long as one is succumbing to one's flesh to serve one's self-seeking, self-centred or self-serving desires, one is under the spirit of mammon. The belief that one has "basic" rights to anything itself an indicator of being under the spirit of mammon. There is no such thing as a "right", not even a right to justice.
